From a property perspective, the north east quarter is still very much a sleepy backwater of fishing villages and rubber plantations. It remained unexplored because of the lack of white sandy beaches. Traditionally, the area was never on the tourism map because other areas on the island offered more immediate potential to develop for tourism. That said, one of the biggest assets seen by those who have had the vision to develop in the area, rivaling anything available on the western shores, are the fantastic views over Phang Nga Bay.

The realization that the airport, Phuket Town , Dulwich International School , and shopping centers such as Tesco Lotus, Big C and Central all lay within easy reach has opened wider possibilities, especially for the growing residential market. While the west coast has developed through tourism, the east coast looks more focused on property development, fulfilling the dream of a home in the sun.

Clever investors have already begun to recognize the potential of the area and this coupled with reasonable land prices, undisputed property land title, big parcel sizes and superb views, has allows developers to offer generous plot sizes to rival their competitors on the West Coast. East Coast Villa Apartments is a prime example of this with the first Phase being sold out and limited units available in Phase II.

Areas in particular, which are drawing a lot of attention, are within the headlands of Ao Po and Cape Yamu.

Today, the area is still one of the least developed parts of the island and retains that quite island charm of local fishing villages and rubber plantations. One of the more ambitious developments that have taken place is the construction of the 18-hole Mission Hills Golf course, which is said to rival that of the Blue Canyon Country Club.

Since the completion of Missions Hills a number of property transactions have taken place mostly in terms of developers buying trenches of land to develop projects on the coat tails of Mission Hills. Within the area another development called The Estate, comprise a 28-rai (45,000 square meters) site at Laem Yang, near Ao Po sits on a hillside location with splendid views of Phang Nga Bay . The Estate offers custom-designed homes on spacious plots averaging 2.3 rai, (3,750 square meters).

Another worthy development Baan Nern Khao offers spacious upscale villas on plots of up to 2,000 square metres. Then, there is the Cape Yamu resort, which spans the kilometer-long strip of the peninsula proper. Cape Yamu is destined to become another Aman Puri development on the East Coast comprising 40 large size residential homes within a resort community on the sea front. There will be a five-star resort hotel run by GMH (of the Chedi fame) comprising villas and luxury cabanas. What makes this project particularly interesting is the teaming of international design superstar Philippe Starck, on interiors, with the architectural eminence of Jean Michel Gathy, famed for the luxury Aman Resorts. Villas will retain elements of Thai traditional architecture, yet offer fresh and inspiring spatial and visual approaches to ocean front living.

Moving south is the Boat Lagoon, Phuket Town and Koh Serey. The entire area is significant considering that it incorporates the administration center for the province - namely the town itself, and hence is quite commercialized and developed. As the island has grown over the last 10 years so have the number of services and businesses that have established themselves to support the tourism industry.
